Life Maxing: A Better Way to Approach Your New Year Goals

January 21, 2026 / Dr. Brad Schwall

Saving money, going to the gym, and finally being on time are some of the most common New Year’s resolutions. But many people find that by February, motivation fades and discouragement sets in. Instead of chasing resolutions, there’s a growing idea called “life maxing”-a way of living that focuses on fulfillment, perspective, and long-term well-being rather than short bursts of change. Here are a few simple principles to help you get more out of life this year.

What Is Life Maxing?

Life maxing is about more than productivity or self-improvement. It’s about:

  • Living with intention and perspective
  • Seeking fulfillment, not perfection
  • Aligning your daily choices with what truly matters
  • Improving both mindset and relationships

Instead of asking, “What do I want to do?” life maxing invites us to ask,
“Who do I want to become?”

Focus on Values and Meaning First

Real change starts with understanding why you want something, not just what you want. Rather than focusing only on behaviors, begin with your values:

  • Identify what truly matters to you (health, family, faith, growth, relationships)
  • Let your actions flow from those values
  • Remember that healthy choices affect your mental health, outlook, and relationships

When values lead, habits are easier to sustain.

Set Balanced, Achievable Goals

Big goals can be inspiring-but they can also be overwhelming. The key is building progress one step at a time. Helpful strategies include:

  • Focus on short-term, realistic goals
  • Break large goals into small, manageable steps
  • Build one habit or skill at a time
  • Avoid “all or nothing” thinking

Small progress adds up-and prevents burnout and discouragement.

Aim for Contentment, Not Just Happiness

Happiness often comes from moments-fun events, good days, exciting experiences. Contentment goes deeper. Contentment grows through:

  • Gratitude for what you already have
  • Appreciating progress, not just outcomes
  • Finding meaning and purpose in daily life
  • Recognizing that joy and struggle often coexist

When gratitude becomes a habit, mindset shifts and emotional well-being strengthens.

Build Resilience for the Inevitable Challenges

Life will always include stress, conflict, anxiety, and disappointment. Resilience helps us bend without breaking. Ways to strengthen resilience:

  • Accept that challenges are part of life
  • Anchor yourself in meaning and values
  • Surround yourself with supportive people
  • Ask for help when needed
  • Remember that there is always hope

Resilience doesn’t eliminate hardship-it helps you face it with strength and perspective.

Final Thought

Life maxing isn’t about doing more.
It’s about living more intentionally. When values guide your choices, goals become realistic, gratitude grows, and resilience strengthens. Over time, small changes lead to meaningful transformation.
