philosophy

Life presents a variety of situations, from traumatic experiences to life transitions, and everything in between. Collaborating with an unbiased professional with whom you can learn to cope with difficulties in an authentic and caring atmosphere is the first step toward healing.

My practice philosophy is based on a holistic approach that tailors your treatment to your presenting problems and goals by utilizing techniques from a variety of evidence based therapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and motivational interviewing. While providing treatment for problems with depression, anxiety, trauma and substance use I focus on building the strengths you bring to treatment to help you reach your goals. I include meditation, mindfulness, nutrition, exercise and sleep as part of the therapy plan as I believe they are important components for achieving and maintaining emotional, physical and spiritual wellness, regardless of age.

Barbara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with experience in, but not limited to, trauma, relationship challenges, emotional distress, life transitions, stress and substance use. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master of Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has provided individual and group therapy in residential and outpatient settings and advocated for adults with disabilities and children in foster care. When she is not working Barbara enjoys spending time in nature and engaging in activities that promote personal growth.
